Are you a new mom, or are you preparing to have a baby in the next few months? Motherhood is one of life’s greatest gifts and there is plenty about it to be cherished, for sure. However, it can also be a time of great adjustment for women, which can equate to a lot of stress and anxiety. At Mind & Soul Therapy, we offer support groups in Miami that are designed to help ease this life transition for moms-to-be and new mothers alike and we would love to meet you. Below, we’ll review a few questions that you should ask yourself as you search for a support group in Miami and we’ll review a few benefits that support groups can provide. Questions? Give us a call! In the meantime, let’s get started.
Questions to Ask Yourself
Do You Prefer an Open or Closed Group?
Open support groups are those which anyone can join at any time. Alternatively, closed groups have a specific group of people enrolled and run for a specific duration. Both types of groups have their benefits and it is important to consider which might be the best fit for your needs. Do you prefer a level of anonymity and a less formal structure? If so, then an open support group might be best for you. If you prefer the opportunity to get to know your group mates on a deeper level and value more structure, then a closed group might suit you best.
How Big Is the Group?
This is important to consider because it is essential that you feel comfortable in your support group. Are you someone who is intimidated easily by talking in front of a lot of people? Do you crave a one-on-one connection with others who are on a path similar to your own? If so, then choosing a smaller group might be ideal for you to get the most out of it. On the other hand, if you thrive in larger groups and prefer the opportunity to develop many like-minded acquaintances, then a larger group might be right up your alley.
How Much Should You Share?
Being in a support group means that you will likely share some personal information with the group at some point in time. At Mind & Soul Therapy, we take confidentiality very seriously and we understand the importance of creating a welcoming and accepting environment for all participants. We encourage open and honest communication in our groups because we feel that is how the most growth is achieved. However, your support group is what you make of it and it is completely up to you how much information you share.
Is a Support Group Enough for Your Needs?
New mothers face a variety of challenges, from nursing difficulties to postpartum depression. While support groups provide many benefits, we ask our members to remain open to other treatments if the circumstances warrant it. For example, the group is here to help walk you through the challenges of postpartum depression and bonding with your baby, but the group cannot offer medical advice. We encourage all members to honestly gauge their medical needs and consider supplemental treatment and counseling when needed.
Benefits of Support Groups
Support groups offer a level of belonging and support that you may not have access to from friends, relatives, and coworkers. Other benefits of our Miami support groups for new moms include:
- Feeling less alone. Talking about your feelings with other moms reduces feelings of isolation.
- Reduced feelings of depression, anxiety, and fatigue. Unbottling your feelings provides emotional relief.
- Being able to be completely open and honest. No one is here to judge or blame, only to support you.
- Improved coping skills. You can learn new skills by hearing how others handle their challenges.
- Greater patience. Hearing about others’ challenges can help you be more gentle and patient with yourself.
- Newfound motivation. Hearing other new moms can give you the motivation you need to succeed in your new role.
- Enhanced confidence and empowerment. As you feel less alone, you’ll feel more capable of your abilities in your new role.
- Access to additional resources. Group members and leaders can provide information and resources for additional help outside of the group.
