How Acupuncture Works: An Expert Explanation

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a 3,000-year-old practice from Traditional Chinese Medicine in which ultra-thin, sterile needles are inserted at specific points along the body's meridian pathways to restore the flow of vital energy (Qi). From a modern biomedical perspective, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, triggers endorphin and serotonin release, reduces inflammation, and modulates pain signals — all without medication.

How does acupuncture help anxiety?

Acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system ("rest and digest"), reducing cortisol levels and calming the amygdala's stress response. Clinical studies show acupuncture reduces anxiety scores comparably to medication in many patients, without side effects or dependency.

Can acupuncture treat chronic pain?

Yes. Acupuncture is one of the most evidence-supported non-pharmacological pain treatments available, with strong research backing for chronic back pain, neck pain, migraines, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and sciatica. The NIH and WHO both recognize acupuncture as an effective pain treatment.

What to Expect

What Happens During Your First Visit

We know starting therapy or psychiatry can feel intimidating. Here's exactly what to expect — no surprises, no pressure.

Step 1: Schedule Your Visit

2 minutes

Call 305-456-1014 or book online. Our team verifies your insurance and finds a time that works for you — often same-week.

Step 2: Intake Questionnaire

10 minutes

Before your visit, you'll complete a brief intake form covering your symptoms, history, medications, and goals. This helps us prepare for your appointment.

Step 3: Comprehensive Evaluation

60 minutes

Your provider conducts a thorough evaluation — not a rushed 15-minute check. We explore your mental health history, lifestyle, hormones, sleep, and physical health to identify root causes.

Step 4: Personalized Treatment Plan

Same visit

Together, you and your provider build a personalized plan — which may include therapy, medication, TMS, acupuncture, BHRT, or lifestyle changes. No two plans are alike.

Step 5: Follow-Up & Ongoing Care

Ongoing

We schedule follow-ups to track your progress and adjust your plan. Most patients begin noticing improvement within 2-4 weeks of starting treatment.
